MulchTec Planter

MulchTec Planter

Manufacturer: MulchTec

Use: Planting into a closed mulch cover or untilled soil.

Development status: In use for 4 years; major upgrade in 2024 with watering at planting, stronger cutting motors and more reliable mulch guidance. Single-grain seeding in mulch layers coming soon.

Metering loader wagon

Metering loader wagon

Manufacturer: Landsberg

Use: Loading and unloading mulch material. Creates an even mulch layer without manual work.

Development status: Mulch is metered onto the bed only; paths remain uncovered.

Adaptations: Custom modifications to produce a more even mulch layer. For details, see our documentation on converting the loader wagon.

Inter-row mulcher

Inter-row mulcher

Manufacturer: RapTrac AG

Use: Care between crop rows: mulching instead of weeding. In particular, we can weed over a mulch layer and control undersown crops or weeds in vegetables. Attachment for the RapTrac with electric drive; also usable on the tractor with power via PTO generator.

Development status: First tests in 2025.

Adaptations: New development

Tractors with RTK GPS

Tractors with RTK GPS

Manufacturer: Fink+Frosch

Use: Automated steering on fixed lanes (1.77 m)

Development status: Complete. Available from Fink + Frosch.

Adaptations: New development. In-house RTK GPS retrofit kit in use on several tractors and the combine. Available from our partner including setup.

RapTrac

RapTrac

Manufacturer: RapTrac AG

Use: Multitool as a lightweight alternative or complement to the tractor, ELECTRIC — here with our inter-row mulcher and mulch elements for green paths.

Development status: Prototype tested in 2024; own machine purchased in 2025 (in use from approx. April).

Adaptations: Close partnership with RapTrac.

"Corkscrew" power harrow

"Corkscrew" power harrow

Manufacturer: Moreni, Modifikation durch das HofLabor

Use: Highly modular power harrow with quick-change tines for different types of tillage and in combination with the seed drill. Enables very shallow, gentle tillage with Samurai blades as an alternative to the peel rotavators common in regenerative farming — also usable as a vertical tillage tool to uproot blackgrass and couch grass and bring it to the surface.

Development status: Successfully operating on all pioneer farms; several machines already in use.

Adaptations: Support wheels for precise depth control; adapted tine form "corkscrew" to lift biomass upwards and pull root weeds and grasses out as whole plants where possible. See also documentation.

Harvest trailer

Harvest trailer

Use: Standard width; track fits the mosaic layout.

HarvestingStandard
Bed-and-path rotary tiller

Bed-and-path rotary tiller

Manufacturer: Breviglieri

Use: Tillage across the bed and both wheel tracks.

Development status: Increasingly replaced by our converted power harrow (more soil-conserving).

Soil cultivationStandard
Top-lifter (clamp-belt harvester)

Top-lifter (clamp-belt harvester)

Manufacturer: Asa Lift

Use: Harvesting carrots, celery, parsnips and more with as little soil movement as possible. Can be mounted offset so the middle row can be harvested without driving over the bed.

Development status: Still needs work to perform well in deeply rooted, heavy soils.

Adaptations: Converted so it can be mounted offset. This allows the middle row to be harvested without driving the tractor over the bed.

HarvestingHofLabor
Potato ridger

Potato ridger

Use: Ridging and weed management in potatoes, oca, maize and more.

Weed managementStandard
Path mulcher

Path mulcher

Manufacturer: RapTrac AG

Use: Maintaining green paths in the CTF system. Available as an attachment for the RapTrac and for the tractor (power via PTO generator).

Development status: First tests in 2025.

Adaptations: New development

HofLaborMowing/Mulching
Rotary rake

Rotary rake

Use: Small rotary rake, for example to windrow mulch from 3–5 neighbouring beds onto one bed. Avoids loading and unloading with the loader wagon.

Development status: The mulch layer is not precise or uniform enough for the mulch planter, but works very well for manual planting (e.g. squash or courgettes) or for post-planting mulch, as with potatoes.

Mowing/MulchingStandard
Bed-width elevator digger

Bed-width elevator digger

Manufacturer: Carlotti

Use: Bed-width, gentle harvest of potatoes and all kinds of root vegetables. Root weeds can be harvested along with the crop.

Development status: In use since 2022; active GPS steering planned.

Adaptations: Track widened to 1.77 m

HarvestingHofLabor
Drum mower, 2.5 m

Drum mower, 2.5 m

Use: Standard machine; fits exactly between two strips in the mosaic. Can handle very high biomass.

Mowing/MulchingStandard
Rotating hoe (camera-guided)

Rotating hoe (camera-guided)

Manufacturer: Feldklasse

Use: Soil-conserving shallow hoeing between crops and in mulch!

Development status: First tests in 2024 with camera guidance and shift frame; used at scale in 2025 for cereal care (instead of rotary weeder). Plan: use shift frame/camera guidance for other machines too.

Adaptations: Slow-rotating hoe with camera row recognition (in testing), based on Feldklasse.

Plot combine

Plot combine

Manufacturer: Wintersteiger, Modell: Quantum Pro

Use: Threshing on strips. Important that the combine runs on CTF tracks. It leaves no compaction in the bed and allows planting and sowing of the following crop without tillage directly after threshing. Variety-pure, stone-free threshing saves high costs in downstream cleaning.

Development status: In use for all cereals; also linseed, carrot seed, nettles, etc. Long term, a more powerful combine with the same track width would be important.

HarvestingStandard
Seed drill

Seed drill

Manufacturer: Moreni, Horsch, Lehner, HofLabor

Use: Modular and no-till capable. Power harrow and seed drill can be lowered independently — decision per bed!

Development status: In wide-scale use since 2023 for cereals, green manures, undersown crops, paths and vegetables.

Adaptations: The seed drill was reduced to bed width and fitted with gauge wheels for precise depth control. A double hopper was added for undersown crops, mixed cropping (e.g. legumes with support crop) and clover paths with the main crop. The drill can also be combined with the power harrow via hydraulic hitch.

SowingSoil cultivationHofLabor
Rotary weeder with broadcast seeder

Rotary weeder with broadcast seeder

Manufacturer: APV

Use: Allows weeding despite straw and harvest residues in the soil. Catches more and larger germinating weeds than conventional tine harrows. Modular use on 1, 2 or 3 beds.

Development status: Test year 3. Very limited use; weather window too small.

Adaptations: Light geometry adjustment from factory

Weed managementSowingHofLabor
Bed rotary tiller

Bed rotary tiller

Manufacturer: Celli

Use: Rotary tillage. Rarely used now.

Development status: Increasingly replaced by our converted power harrow (more soil-conserving).

Soil cultivationStandard
Flail mower, 2.3 m

Flail mower, 2.3 m

Manufacturer: Janssen

Use: Light flail mower, 2.3 m with side shift. Fits exactly between two strips in the mosaic.

Development status: Reaches limits with very woody/high biomass.

Mowing/MulchingStandard
Heavy-duty cultivator

Heavy-duty cultivator

Use: Deep loosening in the crop lane without inversion; breaking the plough pan for water connection and rooting depth.

Development status: In use on all new areas as a first step.
